PROJECT IDEA
You may be wondering why our menopause project is called this. It’s because menopause is extremely rare in the animal kingdom, only a handful of species are known to experience it. These include orcas (killer whales) and humans. Both humans and orcas evolved menopause because post-reproductive females are more valuable helping their families than they would be continuing to have babies. It’s all about ensuring the survival of shared genes through cooperation rather than competition. So, the menopause is a brilliant adaptation! honest.

Orcas and Us is a FREE three-part menopause project which aims to reach a diverse range of women. We are working with peri-menopausal, menopausal and post menopausal women to increase their self-confidence and self-care, improve mood, reduce anxiety, develop coping strategies, provide a safe space to share emotions and ultimately feel heard. This project will run from October 2025 to October 2027.
'SHE OF THE SEASONS' an eco-creativity group based at the wonderful Snapdragons CIC in Victoria Park. Twenty women each year will produce extraordinary folk-inspired wild-making projects for self-care including growing plant-remedies, natural perfume making, storytelling, dancing & singing, willow work and community wassail. This project explores the seasons of nature and the Celtic calendar through the seasons of a woman's life. Our work focuses on helping women reconnect to a new identity. To forge a stronger concept of self outside of roles like caregiving, work or the relentless demands of beauty standards enforced by the patriarchy.
'NEEDLES AND NIGHT SWEATS', our online embroidery workshops will offer women a supportive environment to explore menopause through mindful stitching and a unique opportunity to express their experiences visually from the comfort of their own home. We are providing sessions for 20 women over 2 years hosted by an artist on Zoom.
'WEAVE A HEATWAVE' we will be popping up Livewell's Wellbeing Hubs around the city over 2 years to facilitate a collaborative woven artwork made by women who use the Wellbeing hubs.
These Pop-Ups will bring women across the generations together to share stories. This work will be supported by volunteers from the other sessions. The final artwork will be exhibited in a Wellbeing Hub Roadshow, educating the wider neighbourhood about the menopause.
