The Gathering

Creating a celebration of Plymouth Sound

PROJECT IDEA

This exciting year-long project is a response to the cost of living crisis and is a partnership project between The Conscious Sisters CIC and Plymouth Community Homes. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund Awards for All, Sport England and PCH.

Over the course of a year and through workshops, trips and a supportive network of neighbours, Fishing Friends will help twenty residents who live in social housing closest to the sea to consume free, healthy and sustainable food.  By teaching them to catch, fillet and cook fish, forage at the shoreline and access free food.

Fishing Friends will help residents access the shoreline; mix with others; meet new people and have fun. This work is all about developing friendships and a support network. It is hoped that this experience will enhance their wellbeing and tackle loneliness and social isolation. Participants will get access to fresh healthy free food both from the sea and foraged locally but also signposted to food banks and larders.  Fishing Friends will teach residents to create accessible and healthy recipes, enabling the group to cook and eat together.

Many of the residents have multiple health issues. We hope they will change/adapt their eating habits and help them to make healthier food choices and learn how to cook healthy recipes.

An important aspect of this project is to build confidence through workshops where they will learn a range of skills from learning fishing techniques, visiting the fishmonger confidently to how to cook a fish pie.
